Chettinad Health City is a Global Centre for research and healthcare, and is located in Chennai. The City is an important education hub where culturally, education is considered as the primary route to achieving global ambition. Morphogenesis’ design choice for creating a bold and contemporary aesthetic for this auditorium embodies this youthful and progressive stance. Limited resource was another key generator of the design. To use only that which was essential – namely acoustic material, became the starting point. Almost the entire surface developed from geometric tessellations resulting in a faceted and fluid surface texture across the entire auditorium. Lighting too, was designed in ribbon-like coves running within the acoustic board lines, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow across the auditorium. Resource optimization and a limited palette became the defining parameters of this solution by pushing a simple material like acoustic boards to create a tectonic play.
